Editor-In-Chief: Ambedkar Times & Desh Doaba weekly newspaper strongly underlined the feeling of disappointment and frustration among the SCs and STs caused by decision of the honorable judge of the Supreme Court of India that has diluted the mandate of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities Act, 1989).
This Act was enacted to preclude the oppression of the SCs in their day-to-day life while putting them to heinous crime for no other reasons but of their so called low birth. As is widely well known this law has been very effective and instrumental in keeping the forces of untouchability and social discrimination in check while instilling fear of stern action against the perpetrators ever since its enactment as a constitutional law. But the recent decision by the honorable judge of the Supreme Court sends not only a wrong signal but will encourage the activities of anti-social elements engaged in creating divisions and barriers in the social transformation of Indian society.
The Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities Act, 1989) is based on the true spirit of Liberty, Equality, Fraternity as enshrined in the constitution of India ably drafted by Babasaheb, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the liberator of hundreds of millions of those belonging to the neglected and down trodden sections of society, and democratically adopted by the people of India in the true spirit of ushering in Independent India for the formation of an egalitarian society free from the bonds get of social discrimination based on the notorious principle of low and high.
In order to honor and fulfill the dreams of Babasaheb Dr. B. R. Ambedkar who was such a forceful and passionate exponent of social equality in Indian society Ambedkartimes forum strongly urge the honorable President and the Prime Minister of India to restore the vitality and the efficacy of this Act, because amendment of any constitutional law falls solely within the ambit of Parliament who manifests the true representation of the people in a democracy.
If anybody abuses the operation of this law he/she should be held fully responsible and accountable for the consequences. Also at the same time the long struggle spearhead by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar to build Independent India free of caste boundaries should not be allowed to put on reverse by deprivin the large masses of the historically deprived sections of the society the protections promulgated under this law.
It is, therefore, earnestly pleaded that the Government of India should immediately take all possible measures to revive this law to its original strength and vitality and help building bridges of mutual respect and unity among different segments of society instead of creating gaps of social disharmony and disintegration in the society.
